TNL Take: Looks like Sony is going to finally start taking eSports seriously.

PlayStation announced a partnership with ESL to launch PlayStation Tournaments which is essentially their eSports platform.

While the Press was fairly minimal there were some interesting details mentioned:

/01 NBA2K7 IS THE DEBUT GAME

NBA2K7 has never been a big draw on both the viewership or event side – but that will probably change once Marketing and Money come in.

But why NBA2K7?

More than likely to coincide with the start of the 2017 NBA Season. Now that’s a smart Marketing move and will get some extra free Press.

/02 1-ON-1 GAMES ONLY

The initial NBA2K7 PlayStation Tournaments will only future single player games but Sony hinted that multiplayer support will be coming soon.

/03 GAME STYLE

The big question around the tournament will be the standard 1-on-1 mode and the games will not be held in the MyPark or 2K Pro-Am modes.

Will everyone pick the Warriors? Curry is from another planet.

/04 PRIZE POOL

Considering the ever increasing prize pools across the eSports landscape - $4M for Call of Duty World League alone - the top 3 players of every major tournament will win "a DualShock 4 controller and other PlayStation” gear.

C’mon Sony....
