The DreamHack Masters Spring 2020 tournaments have come to an end and we have our winners for the European and the North American segments of the League. BIG reverse swept G2 esports in the European finals while FURIA dominated Team Liquid in the North American finals. 

BIG win DH Masters Spring 2020 EU

G2 esports started the European grand finals with a one map advantage. Despite having the one-map advantage, G2 esports also had the first map pick. It was a significant step as G2 easily won their map pick to go 2-0 in the finals. Vertigo has always been one of the strongest maps for G2 and it was no surprise to see the entire team step up to the occasion. Kenny “kennyS” Schrub finished Vertigo with eighteen kills but it was Audric “JaCkz” Jug who topped the scoreboard with twenty frags. 

The next map was Nuke, one of the strongest maps for the German roster. BIG won Nuke with a similar margin as G2 won the first map. Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz stepped up to finish the map with twenty-seven kills. Tabsen’s performance helped G2 on the terrorist side, the weaker of the two sides on Nuke. 

BIG started Dust 2 in the same manner as nuke ended. With a 5-1 start to the map, it was no surprise to see BIG as the favorites, according to our bookmakers. At 4-10, things looked dire for G2 esports. The French players won the final round of the first half to salvage a respectable 5-10 score. But G2 was only able to win the pistol round in the second half. Subsequent rounds went BIG’s way and Tabsen and co. won the map with a 16-6 scoreline. 

The final map of the series was also the most exciting one in the Grand Finals. Mirage is a comfortable map pick for either team and it was no surprise to see this map go to overtime. G2 looked prime for revenge and won the first seven CT side rounds on Mirage. Things looked bleak for BIG, but they managed to bring back the first half to a 11-4 scoreline. 

BIG had a similar approach to the CT side as G2’s CT performance. Florian “syrsoN” Rische was a beast for BIG on the CT side and had 28 kills on the CT side. His AWP was always able to find an opponent. However, there were multiple instances when the players’ individual performance had to win the round for BIG. 

Can BIG Break Into The Top Ten?

BIG is ranked 24th in the HLTV rankings, a far cry from some of the best teams in the world. The German team has been in the top ten before. But this time its different. Teams are playing online due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

Playing online allows players to put forth an aggressive playstyle and have a different approach to their games. Playing in front of thousands of fans is a different experience. The best CS:GO players of all times have relished playing in front of an audience and that is when they perform their best. 

BIG won $54,000 in prize money and secured 400 ESL Pro Tour points. 

FURIA – The New King of North America

In the North American segment, FURIA faced off against Team Liquid in the Grand Finals. The team has had a great run in CS:GO recently after a third-place finish at the ESL Pro League Season 11 North America and coming in second behind MIBR at the ESL One: Road to Rio. 

Coming from the upper bracket, FURIA had a one map advantage over Team Liquid. The two teams had already faced each other once in the group stage where FURIA won a close series against Team Liquid. However, this time, FURIA was back in full force as the team finished Team Liquid in two straight maps. 

The first map saw FURIA kick off the Grand Finals in stellar fashion, losing just one map in the first eleven rounds. However, they were unable to continue their dominant form and allowed Team Liquid to steal five rounds through the course of the first half. Team Liquid was always playing catch-up and they were unable to meet FURIA’s lead in the map. FURIA won map 1, Mirage, with a 16-12 score. 

The second map of the series (third technically) was Vertigo. This was FURIA’s map pick and they were always the favorites to win this map. FURIA’s performance on this map saw a near equal contribution by all of its members. FURIA won the map 16-5, and the series 2-0. 

FURIA completes its time as one of the strongest teams in North America. The team has been dominating the CGO scenes over the past few weeks. As FURIA look forth to continuing their strong performance, CS:GO fans will eagerly watch the team as we head closer to LAN events. 

With this victory FURIA won $40,000 in prize money. The team also secured 320 ESL Pro Tour points which will be an instrumental factor in the latter stages of the ESL Pro Tour.
