Esports will be a medaled event at the 2022 19th Annual Asian games. The Hangzhou, China-based event takes place from September 10-25, 2021.
Following the 39th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which took place in Muscat, Oman, the games’ official handle announced esports’ inclusion as a medal event for the games.
For the past several years, esports has been pushing the boundaries of mainstream media and seeking acceptance in bigger sports events. The Olympics committee has actively debated esports’ inclusion into the games, but the lack of a central governing body has proved to be a major obstacle in esports’ inclusion in the Games.

The Asian Games are familiar territory for esports. The 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia featured five games as demonstration titles. League of Legends, Arena of Valor, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, and Clash Royale were played during the 2018 games. China won two Golds during the 2018 games but the games could not be broadcast on state-run TV due to local regulations. These restrictions will likely be lifted for the 2022 Hangzhou Games.
The 19th Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou.
But the 2022 Asian Games will feature esports titles as medal events bringing esports to the mainstream. As millions of people watch esports events take place at the Asian games, there will be widespread acceptance for esports titles in the future.
As esports continues to grow in popularity and mainstream media coverage, young players are rapidly forging careers in this industry. Esports is attracting tens of millions of dollars in investments and companies are already looking to ensure sustainable operations and new revenue sources.
The Hangzhou Asian Games will take place between September 10 and 25, 2022. Nagoya, Japan will host the 2024 edition while Qatar will host the 2030 edition of the games.
