TNL Take: This week we look at the last two weeks with the launch of the ELEAGUE Cup: Rocket League.

TBS

Well done ELEAGUE.

Not surprisingly, the premiere performed well, ranking it the #4 show behind only The CW which is in a lot more households than TBS.

As Rocket League is completely family friendly, Turner was able to close several brand deals including new entrants Cheez-It, Boost Mobile and Navy Federal Credit Union.

What's also not surprising is that this past week - which hit #2 for the year - wasn't an actual esports event but rather content shot around the ELEAGUE Cup aka shoulder programming.

Here's an example of Rocket League's content:

Not only is Rocket League easy to watch, the game and teams are starting to build their own storylines - just like traditional sports.  Further, this wasn't the normal multi-hour tournament but rather just 1 hour long which works well at the Friday 10PM time-slot.

Expect more content of this type from ELEAGUE.

TNL Take: This week continues the eSports on TV trend with several key stats:

  • DisneyXD broadcast the 2017 Nintendo World Championship for the first time and shows Nintendo's dedicated push into eSports in 2017 in addition to a great Sunday time slot of 5PM
  • Not including DisneyXD's 60+ eSports programs to date, the total on all other channels including ESPN, TBS and the NFL Network has now hit 50 - more than double that of 2016
  • The CW again benefitted by showcasing eSports during a key time slot - Tuesday Prime Time

THE CW

Out of all the eSports programming over the past year, The CW has continually given the best programming time slots: Weekday Prime Time. Not including Candy Crush - please don't @ me - The CW again takes the #1 slot with their Chasing the Cup series, this time featuring Injustice 2.

Does this showcase the popularity of Injustice 2 and the Fighting genre for this audience? Not necessarily as ESPNU showed the same game on a Wed at 1AM and drew the lowest audience of any eSports program with 11,000 viewers.

More than likely the high viewership is The CW's reach, coupled with a great time slot; vs. the actual title as evidenced by the #2 program around another new game H1Z1.

DISNEYXD

We've already covered DisneyXD's massive eSports programming but this past week was a special one: the 2017 Nintendo World Championship were broadcast for the first time on the channel.

And it delivered.

Nintendo's family friendly games fits perfectly with DisneyXD's audience and it's not surprising that the 2017 World Championship would rank as #1 - what is surprising is that it drew 30%+ more viewership than the 2017 EVO Super Smash Bros. Finals which is the second ranked program.

Nintendo based games/events currently make up 6 of the top 7 ranked eSports programs on DisneyXD.

TBS

This week ELEAGUE had their Counter-Strike preview show before the start of the playoffs, which always perform well as it's just 1 hour vs. 3 hours.

The very interesting part is that this week, the Preview show was shown at 3AM and still garnered 300,000+ viewers.

Pretty amazing considering the time slot and more data showing the audience appetite for eSports shoulder content.

Here's what stands out so far in Q2:

Another reason the numbers are higher: the time. Last year's Mortal Kombat event was on Monday Prime Time and same for H1Z1; on a Thursday night at 9:00 PM.

One additional point on H1Z1, if you compare the 18-49 ratings vs. the NHL Playoffs which basically ran head-to-head (yes, on fewer total households compared with the NBC Sports Network), it's still just about even - 0.2 vs. a 0.3 for the NHL.

  • Turner's ELEAGUE has now had 5 episodes of Street Fighter and seems to settling in around the ~300K Total Viewers and 100K+ in the 18-49 demo.  As nothing has been announced yet on Counter-Strike Season 3 or Turner's potential next league, it will be interesting to see if they continue to give it the same time Friday late night time slot.

  • The only other addition was EA's FIFA Regionals and waiting to verify the numbers but with 17 programs through 4 months compared with just over 20 for all of 2016, we're off to a good start.

Also want to pour the bottle out for the good man behind SportsTVRatings.com who will no longer be providing Nielsen data I hunger for on a weekly basis on his site. He patiently taught me so me so much about how to - correctly - understand TV ratings and separate the sensational headlines from the truth. You will be missed sir and this one's for you.
