Gen.G is the latest North American organization to potentially exist without a CS:GO squad. The organization has placed its CS:GO squad on the transfer list and the players are already searching for a new home.
The organization is still evaluating its CS:GO options as COVID-19 has had an adverse impact on the professional Counter-Strike scene and several organizations have found it difficult to stay afloat in the North American scene. Gen.G’s CS:GO roster is ranked 33rd in the HLTV rankings.
Players aren’t benched and it isn’t VALORANT over CS. We want them to see any offers as we go in to 2021. We recognize that it has been a challenging period for professional CS, and we’re looking at how the scene develops into 2021. In the meantime, we wanted to make sure to minimize the impact on players, so we have allowed them to keep their options open while still under contract with us. Gen.G representative to Rushbmedia.
The representative also said the organization is willing to waive buyout clauses if the players wanted to go somewhere else.
Gen.G entered the CS:GO scene in December 2019 when it picked up the former Cloud9 core roster. The team is a part of the FLASHPOINT League and placed 5-6th in Season 1. The teams’ performance in Season 2 was much worse at the 9-10th place. However, the organization says the team’s performance has nothing to do with its decision.
What’s Next for FLASHPOINT?
Gen.G is a founding member of the FLASHPOINT CS:GO League. The organization reportedly paid $2 million for its spot in the League. With an uncertain future for its CS:GO roster, Gen.G’s spot in the FLASHPOINT League is now in doubt.
FLASHPOINT Season 2 has had a rocky start in 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic playing havoc to the CS:GO circuit. The North American TO’s second season came under heavy scrutiny as some of its members tested positive for COVID-19, despite multiple reassurances of a safe LAN environment for players and teams.
