Karrigan returns to FaZe Clan CSGO: a quick look at his new team

FaZe Clan has given a wild ride to its fans for over three years since the team last had a proper captain. In this time, the team managed to win tournaments, but those were few and far between. Now, the organization finally did what fans have been asking during these last years – add a proper captain to the team with Karrigan.

The new player is actually an old friend, though; he’s the man who took FaZe to a Major final back in 2018: Finn “karrigan” Andersen.

No more NiKo

NiKo was once fighting for the title of best CSGO player in the world under karrigan

Nikola “NiKo” Kovač is one of the most popular players in CSGO. A world-class rifler that can take the awper role as well, NiKo was a key player for FaZe success back in 2017, when he played under karrigan.

However, this success is stained by his last months in FaZe, which turned out to be quite controversial. NiKo took the role of in-game leader after “karrigan” left the team in late 2018, and his performance as a captain caused many issues for the team.

Recently, speaking with HLTV, Marcelo “coldzera” David revealed some of the issues present in FaZe during NiKo’s time:

“[…] it took me three months to change a role on Nuke because I wanted to play better on this map, and we started doing better because of this. Some changes took a long time to happen, so we weren’t very comfortable.”

Quotes such as those clearly point at major issues brought by NiKo. In all fairness, however, NiKo never was supposed to be a captain. At times, the role felt on him, but this is a matter that deserve to be discussed to the fullest extent.

In any case, NiKo has been removed from the team back in October 2020. Since then, the team has been on a “zombie” phase, as they waited for the ideal pieces to be available.

Waiting for Karrigan

Twistzz was a key player for Liquid’s rise back in 2019, now under Karrigan

Signing karrigan was no easy task from FaZe Clan, and the time spent waiting for him proves that they were committed to him.

Since October, when NiKo left, not much happened with FaZe. As far as tournaments and results goes, the team finished SteelSeries Invitational 2021 in second place. Other than that, the team’s best result was a 5th – 8th placing at IEM Beijing-Haidian 2020 EU.

However, one major roster change happened during the timeframe since NiKo left to February. FaZe managed to add Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken, ex-Liquid star and one of the best riflers in the world to their roster.

Twistzz has already played a few official games, and his performances are nothing but impressive. He is replacing ex-North Markus “Kjaerbye” Kjærbye, who didn’t impress during his short spell with the squad.

All pieces are in place

Karrigan has incredible players under his leadership

FaZe Clan confirmed karrigan signing in mid-February 2021. With the old leader back, FaZe is now one of the most dangerous teams in the whole CSGO scene.

To recapitulate, let’s take a quick look at FaZe’s current roster. First, of course, we have Karrigan. The experienced leader was originally removed from FaZe back in 2018. His removal came after the team failed to qualify for ECS and EPL Finals back then.

Yet, Karrigan managed to prove his capacities as a captain after his run with Mousesports. With him, Mousesports won cs_summit 5, CSGO AC2019, DreamHack Open Tours 2019, ICE Challenge 2020.

Back to FaZe, the team also counts with the Brazilian world-class star “coldzera”, and ex-Liquid “Twistzz” as their main fraggers. Both players can compete for a place among the best ten players in the world at times.

Then, to complete the team we have “rain” and “broky”. Rain has been with the team since 2016, and has been one of the key players in FaZe successful seasons. The player is a reliable backbone that can rise up to most occasions.

As for “broky”, he was brought to the team in 2019. The young Latvian player has been a consistent asset and rifler, and has been on the top of the scoreboard a couple of times as well.

What to expect from FaZe Clan under Karrigan leadership?

coldzera hyped karrigan’s arrival through the last weeks

There is no reason to be conservative regarding this new FaZe Clan roster. After all, the team now finally has a captain, two high-caliber experienced players and two great support players.

Yet, it’s unfair to not give the team some time to adapt. First, it’s important to note that FaZe is currently without a coach. The squad is waiting until mid-March in order to add Robert “RobbaN” Dahlström back as their coach.

Once RobbaN is officially brought as the team coach, FaZe will be playing in full force. With such a roster, and hopefully a capable team in the background backing the players, FaZe is set to quickly return to be among the best teams in the world.

As things stand at the moment, we have Natus Vincere, Astralis and Vitality fighting for the number one position in the world rankings. FaZe can possibly join them and tournaments would be much more interesting to watch.

Is it safe to bet on Karrigan’s FaZe right now?

While the roster is in place, FaZe still will be a wild card until March. Without a coach, and while Karrigan builds its gameplan for the team, FaZe is a risky bet.
