League of Legends and eSports Weekly News Update

With a large number of tournaments taking place all around the world, the last decade has seen casual gamers turning into pros one after another. What was just a hobby is now a full-fledged sport, with its own teams, coaches, casters, and professional contracts. Your typical five buddies who spent their nights playing the original Dota are now entrepreneurs with their own eSports enterprises and a costume to go with the new persona. You just have to look at the growing South African eSports scene to realize that you can make a living out of video games. Only in 2016, the country has hosted some good-paying tournaments:

EVO Japan Gets Funded

When you think eSports chances are that the first games that come to your mind are League of Legends, Counterstrike, maybe even Dota and Overwatch. Some would even add FIFA. But not many know that one of the most successful eSports genres is fighting games.

According to PVP Live, EVO Japan got an initial investment of 1 million dollars from three companies: Hearts United Group, Shochiku Broadcasting and Aetas. They are no strangers to the gaming scene, since Hearts Gaming Group is owned by Aetas, the same company who own 4Gamer, the site which broke the news. The companies partnered with SRKX Productions, the parent company of EVO in the United States for an unnamed fee, to bring EVO to Japan.

Japan may be one of the major videovgame battlegrounds when it comes to individual gaming, but it has been slow to follow the eSports trend. This investment into EVO shows the Japanese tendency to favor fighting games and with the recent addition of League of Legends Japan, the country is ready to welcome eSports.

Interview with Jens Hilgers

Smartcast interviews Jens Hilgers (founder of Turtle Entertainment, the company that operates ESL). They try to shed a different light on the eSports situation today, from the market opportunities to the role of players and teams. He interview comes at roughly the same time as Riot Games’ competitive ruling on a probable conflict of interest between Fnatic and G2 Esports that stemmed from a loan that Jens Hilger issued to Fnatic’s parent company, Sannpa Ltd.

Companies are like small children: they always need a bigger company to protect them. It’s like being in a family. Tencent, the parent company of Riot Games, is now the richest in Asia and in the world top 10 in market capital, currently valued at 255 billion USD.
